It’s all about tradition when Ali and Joy seek out the city’s favourite Jewish noshing. To start off, Joy pops into Mashu Mashu for Mediterranean-style grilled kebabs and a platter of hummus, baba ganoush, tabouleh and matbouha stewed tomato salad with pita bread.
Curious about kosher? Lori Starr from Toronto’s UJA Federation gives us the lowdown on the meaning of kosher and the difference between Ashkenazi and Sephardic foods.
Joy also takes on the traditional corned beef on rye sandwich at Wolfie’s Delicatessen and gets a lesson on other deli favourites like pastrami, Montreal smoked meat and roast beef. Don’t forget the pickle!
Meanwhile, Ali is in for some Ashkenazic treats like fresh cottage cheese, kreplach, latkes, blintzes, and matzo at Daiter’s Fresh Market.
Finally, the pair head off to Kiva’s Bagels where Ali learns how to braid a challah bread and Joy tucks into delicious hand-rolled bagels with fresh cream cheese and wild lox before noshing on some fruit flavoured rugelach and hamantaschen. Oy vey, what a day!
